Isolating Clusters with Wolf-rayet Stars in I Zw 18

چکیده

We present UV images and spectra of the starburst galaxy I Zw 18, taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. The high spatial resolution of these data allows us to isolate clusters containing Wolf-Rayet stars of the subtype WC. Our far-UV spectra clearly show C IV λλ1548,1551 and He II λ1640 emission of WC stars in two clusters: one within the bright (NW) half of I Zw 18, and one on the outskirts of this region. The latter spectrum is unusual, because the C IV is seen only in emission, indicating a spectrum dominated by WC stars. These data also demonstrate that the H I column in I Zw 18 is strongly peaked in the fainter (SE) half of I Zw 18, with a column depth far larger than that reported in previous analyses. Subject headings: stars: Wolf-Rayet – galaxies: starburst – galaxies: stellar content – ultraviolet: galaxies

Hot Massive Stars: The Impact of HST

We review the contribution of Hubble Space Telescope to the study of hot, luminous stars. Optical and IR imaging have permitted spatially resolved observations of young, massive clusters within Local Group galaxies, such as R136, NGC 3603 and Arches, revealing unprecedented concentrations of very massive O stars. UV spectroscopy of field OB stars in the Magellanic Clouds have provided suitable ...

We report the discovery of broad Wolf-Rayet emission lines in the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) spectrum of the NW component of I Zw 18, the lowest-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy known. Two broad WR bumps at the wavelengths λ4650 and λ5800 are detected indicating the presence of WN and WC stars. The total numbers of WN and WC stars inferred from the luminosities of the broad He I...

I Zw 18 is the most metal poor star-forming galaxy known and is an ideal laboratory to probe stellar evolution theory at low metallicities. Using archival HST WFPC2 imaging and FOS spectroscopy we were able to improve previous studies. We constructed a continuum free HeII λ4686 map, which was used to identify Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars recently found by ground-based spectroscopy and to locate diffus...

The Starburst - Interstellar Medium Interaction in NGC 1569 I . Location and Nature of He ii Sources

We present the detection of He ii sources in the Im galaxy NGC 1569 from HST WFPC2 imagery. Out of the fifteen detections, seven were Wolf-Rayet stars, five were stellar clusters with associated He ii emission, and three were sources of unknown origin. The detected Wolf-Rayet stars’ colors and magnitudes are similar to Large Magellanic Cloud late-type WN stars. The physical origin of the other ...

Synthesis Models for Starburst Populations with Wolf-Rayet Stars

The prospects of utilizing Wolf-Rayet populations in starburst galaxies to infer the stellar content are reviewed. I discuss which Wolf-Rayet star features can be detected in an integrated stellar population. Specific examples are given where the presence of Wolf-Rayet stars can help understand galaxy properties independent of the O-star population. I demonstrate how populations with small age ...
